Video: Paul Shows how to sow direct in May

In this video, Paul shows us how to quickly prepare a weedy patch for sowing seeds directly.

This 2sqm patch has quite a few unwanted weeds, bindweed in particular. We don't want to use herbicides, so we use No-Dig methods to keep on top of weeds.

First, we mulch with a thick layer of cardboard and soak. Then we top with a couple of inches of peat-free compost. If you already have a weed-free area, you can skip these steps.

Rake your soil to remove all big clumps, the finer the better.

If it is a dry day, water the compost prior to sowing, if there is a dry spell water your seeds and seedlings.

Sow thinly, take a small pinch of seeds and try to cover the entire area, repeat over and over until you run out of seeds. Plants need space and good airflow to become big and healthy.

Firm seeds into the soil to make good contact, this will help trigger germination.

The weather in mid-May is pretty much perfect for sowing seeds directly, in 6-8 weeks we'll see our first flowers from this sowing!

Have you sown your seeds yet?
